Thursday, 29 December 2011ANKARA (A.A) - Turkish dailies mostly covered on their Thursday edition a natural gas pipeline deal between Turkey and Russia, a debate over a recent hike in retirement pensions of Turkish lawmakers, and the death of a Turkish folk singer popularly associated with a military takeover in 1980.
"Putin's relief for Turkey's Nabucco disappointment" daily RADIKAL headlined when telling about a deal signed between Turkey and Russia that allows a proposed west-bound gas pipeline to pass under Turkish Black Sea waters. The daily described the agreement for the South Stream project as "huge" saying that it came as a consolation for Ankara which had given up hopes for the Nabucco pipeline project. The daily said Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin attended the penning ceremony which it said had shown the importance Moscow attaches to the deal. "A Turkish bullet to Nabucco" daily VATAN commented on the agreement over the Russian pipeline, saying that deal had "officially killed" Nabucco pipeline project that would carry Azeri natural gas to Europe. Daily SABAH said the agreement also included a price cut in gas Turkey buys from Russia's Wstern Line, which the daily said had saved Turkey billions of dollars. "We have initiated the dialogue with Mr. Erdogan and now the agreement came as a new year's gift for both of our countries," daily MILLIYET quoted Putin as saying.
Daily HURRIYET said leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party, or CHP, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, has sent a letter to Turkish President Abdullah Gul, calling him on to veto a bill that was passed in a last minute ditch during late night parliament session to introduce a hike in retirement pensions of Turkish MPs. Daily VATAN said leader of the opposition Nationalist Movement Party Devlet Bahceli also urged the Turkish president to return the legislation to the parliament.
"Singer of the military coups passes away" daily ZAMAN said over the demise of Hasan Mutlucan, a Turkish folk singer who became popular for the heroic Turkish folk songs he sang on the radio during the initial phases of the military takeover in September 1980. "The stern voice of the coup passes away," said daily ZAMAN over Mutlucan's death. |
