He believes that old rules of world order are crumbling today, and there are the outlines of a new order, where the UN will continue to be at the forefront. Recalling the main events of the year, the UN reminds of the birth of the seven billionth child, UN's new member-state, the events in the Arab world, the nuclear accident in Japan, etc.
"I am convinced that we have reached a critical point in history. Everything is changing. Old foundations are crumbling. We do not know what will be the new order. But we can be confident that the United Nations will be at the forefront," said the head of the UN at a press conference on the results of the year.
This year, Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General was elected unanimously for the second term. He formulated five priorities for the near future: sustainable development, creating safer world, strengthening measures for crisis prevention, assistance to countries in transition period and empowerment of women and youth.
In 2011, more than 120 thousand peacekeepers have served in 16 missions on four continents, helping people of the world to build peace and defend democratic values. |
