Argentinean police detained a man, who tried to board a flight to Madrid with about 250 rare reptiles and mollusks in his luggage, the La Segunda newspaper said on Tuesday.

Airport staff spotted living creatures while doing infrared screening of the luggage.

A subsequent search revealed that the luggage owner, a Czech national, had about 250 rare animals in his bags, including nine poisonous snakes.

Animal experts said all the animals would not have survived a flight to Czech Republic via Madrid.

The man was detained and charged with smuggling exotic animals. He faces from four to ten years in prison if found guilty.
