Amid an all-time low of relations with Turkey, Israel is considering recognizing the Armenian Genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire

The news comes just after a similar legislation was passed in France, which provoked a severe diplomatic crisis between the two countries, with Turkey recalling its ambassador from Paris.

Monday a committee at the Israeli Knesset started debating a legislation of the massacre of tens of thousands of Armenians at the hands of the Turks between 1915 and 1917.

The legislation includes commemorating April 24, the day the killings started, as a day devoted to the memory of the victims.

A similar proposal has been scrapped by the Israeli Parliament back in 2007, when relations with Turkey were much more firendly.

The Israeli-Turkish dynamic has been harshened when in May 2010 the Israeil army attacked a humanitarian flotilla headed to Gaza, killing 9 Turkish citizens on board.

This provoked Turkey to recall its ambassador and cease cooperation on bilateral agreements, including such in the sphere of the military.

Last week, the French Parliament adopted a law that made it a crime to deny the 1915-7 Armenian Genocide.
