16 Rioters Arrested in Kazakh Zhanaozen

Some 16 rioters were arrested in the city of Zhanaozen in the Mangistau Region for the participation in mass riots, Chairman of the appeal penal in the Court of the Mangistau Region Nurserik Sharipov told journalists on Saturday, Kazinform reported.

"The courts in the Mangistau Region issued arrest warrants against 16
people for the participation in mass riots under Article 241 Part 2 of
the Kazakh Criminal Code - participation in mass riots, " Sharipov said.

According to Sharipov, the investigation continues.

Mass disorders hit the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen in the Mangistau region on Dec. 16 which killed 15 and injured about 100 people. President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree to impose a state of emergency in the area from Dec. 17 to Jan. 5.
