Construction of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway Reaches Final Stage

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway construction project is in the final stage, Azerbaijani Prime Minister Artur Rasizade said after a meeting of the Georgian-Azerbaijan intergovernmental commission in Tbilisi on Tuesday.

"Financial issues have been solved and the railway will be constructed at the end of 2012 or at least in early 2013," he said.

Rasizade noted that this project will support the direct railway communication between Europe and Asia.

In his turn, Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri underlined the Georgian sector of the road in the best case will be ready by the end of 2012 or in early 2013. "This is the major project for the region because it will support the direct railway communication between Europe and create new jobs," he said.

The project of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway transport corridor includes the construction of the Kars-Akhalkalaki railroad with the length of 98 km, of which 68 km runs via the Turkey and 30 km via Georgia.
