Many service companies of Mangistau region and 20 enterprises in other regions are ready to employ fired oil workers from Zhanaozen, Kazakh First Deputy Prime Minister Umirzak Shukeev said at a meeting with representatives of the fired workers, Mangistau region's akimat (regional executive body) reported.

In turn, oil workers said they are ready to consider proposals on employment, but insist on the revision of procedures used for their dismissal.
Since May the Mangistau region has repeatedly experienced strikes by oil companies' employees, demanding higher wages. The court found the protest action illegal. The firms dismissed thousands of workers for striking and absenteeism. Some of the strikers returned to their jobs and new staff were hired in the place of those dismissed. The companies stated that oil production volume may drop because of the protests during the year.

On Friday, Dec. 16 discontents of oil workers ended up with mass riots which took place in the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen in the Mangistau region which killed 14 and injured about 90 people. President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree to impose a state of emergency in the area from Saturday.

Until job providing, the city officials will give to oil workers the opportunity to participate in paid public works. Moreover, the leadership of the Ministry of Oil and Gas was instructed to consider other options for Mangistau oil workers employment.
