U.S. Department of State Representative Meets with Georgian Opposition |

Saturday, 17 December 2011US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Eric Rubin met with the parliamentary and extra-parliamentary opposition, the U.S. embassy in Georgia said on Friday.
The issues of Georgia's integration with NATO, the upcoming parliamentary elections and the Georgian-Russian relations were discussed. Georgian opposition members emphasized that they expect Georgia's progress toward the integration into the alliance on the eve of the NATO Chicago summit.
Free Democrats leader Irakli Alasania told media that the issue of ensuring fair elections in Georgia and U.S. support in ensuring a clear and democratic electoral environment, were also discussed.
"Bidzina Ivanishvili was deprived of Georgian citizenship," he said. "We also protested against this. We discussed the situation after a new player appeared on the political arena."
Republican leader David Usupashvili stressed that the problem with freedom restriction and the situation in mass media, which are under the pressure of the authorities were discussed.
Free Democrats and Republicans agreed to establish the alliance with the social movement Georgia Dream. Billionaire Ivanishvili is creating this alliance.
Rubin will meet with representatives of the Georgian executive power and the parliament. |
