Thursday, 15 December 2011Time magazine named The Protester as its 2011 Person of the Year on Wednesday, citing the widespread protest movements that have sparked debate and dissent across the Middle East, Europe and the United States, reported dpa.
"A year after a Tunisian fruit vendor set himself ablaze, dissent has spread across the Middle East, to Europe and the US, reshaping global politics and redefining people power," the magazine noted.
"All over the world, the protesters of 2011 share a belief that their countries' political systems and economies have grown dysfunctional and corrupt - sham democracies rigged to favour the rich and powerful and prevent significant change."
The Person of the Year accolade purports to recognize the person or thing that had most influenced culture and news during the year. Last year's honour went to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
The runner's up for this year's choice were Admiral William McRaven, head of the US Joint Special Operations Command, Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei, US politician Paul Ryan and Kate Middleton, wife of Britain's Prince William. |
