Azerbaijan, Russia Begin Negotiations on Gabala Radar Station’s Lease |

Tuesday, 13 December 2011Russian-Azerbaijani negotiations on the final settlement of the issues regarding extending term of lease of the Gabala radar station will today begin in Baku, Russian Defense Ministry said.
Russian interdepartmental delegation is headed by Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov. The negotiations will be held on Dec. 15, RIA Novosti reported.
It was impossible to get information from the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry regarding the negotiations.
Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said in November that Russia plans to fully rebuild the Gabala radar station in Azerbaijan and at the same time reduce the size of the area leased for the radar station's needs.
The Gabala radar station located in north-western Azerbaijan was built in Soviet times as one of the most important elements of a missile defence system of the USSR. After Azerbaijan gained independence the radar station become the country's property and Russia continued to use it.
Previously, the Defence Ministry reported about holding negotiations with Azerbaijan to extend the lease of the Gabala radar station until 2025. The term of the lease agreement and exploitation conditions of this facility expires in December, 2012.
Russia plans to complete the construction of a new radar station Voronezh-VP in Gabala, Azerbaijan in 2019. This station will replace a radar station of previous generation Darial, General Director of Academician A.L. Mints Radio Engineering Institute Vladimir Savchenko said in an interview with RIA Novosti earlier. |
