Iranian protesters who broke into the UK embassy in Tehran earlier Tuesday took 6 British diplomatic officers as hostages, who were then rescued by Iranian police, according to reports.

After initially doing little to prevent the attacks, which also targeted another British diplomatic facility in Tehran, Iranian police have resorted to force, including teargas, to drive looters out of the buildings.

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated it is "sorry" for the events, vowing that police authorities will do everything in their power to prevent escalation and that perpetrators will be brought to justice.

The UK Foreign Office has vehemently denounced the events. "We are outraged by this. It is utterly unacceptable and we condemn it," said a statement.

Britain further argued that Iranian authorities have failed to meet their duties as required by international law and protect diplomatic offices in their country.

In a later statement, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is "sorry for the unacceptable behavior of a small number of protesters, in spite of the efforts of the police."

It added that it has asked police authorities to immediately take control of the situation and force all protesters out of the British diplomatic buildings.

The Iranian Foreign Affairs Ministry further stated that the country has followed all requirements of international law, and that all perpetrators will face the severity of the law.

Recently Great Britain and Iran entered into a diplomatic conflict, after the UK announced a full-scale embargo on financial transactions with the Islamic republic.

Iran has responded Monday by issuing a two-weeks' notice for the British ambassador to leave the country.

Tensions between Iran and the West have been intensified since the International Atomic Energy Agency published a report suggesting it has grounds to believe that the Iranian nuclear program is not intended for peaceful purposes only, as the Iranian government argues.

This has provoked Israel to issue a statement that a military strike on Iran is "more likely" than before, which in turn resulted in a belligerent position by the Islamic republic.
