Friday, 21 October 2011The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Azerbaijani ambassador on Friday to protest over the death of an Iranian soldier who was shot by Azerbaijani border guards on Wednesday morning, Iran’s Fars agency reports.
The Iranians said the killing was a violation of international norms and went against the spirit of the two nations’ good neighborly relations.
The 18-year-old soldier,who was unarmed, accidentally crossed the border where he was detained by Azerbaijani border guards and shot, Fars reports.
Azerbaijan has not returned the body of the dead soldier, Iran’s Mehr agency reports.
Azerbaijani media affirm that an incident took place at the border on Wednesday morning involving a violation at the border, in response to which a search party and additional forces were sent. The Azeris claim the person crossing the border disobeyed an order to stop, and was shot, and later died of his wounds on the way to the hospital.
Azeri media claim his body has been returned to Iran.
