Thursday, 13 October 2011The meeting of the Georgian Delegation with the US Parliamentary Delegation within the scope of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, was held on October 8, in Bucharest. The participants from the American side were the Head of the Delegation, Michael Turner (Republican Party, Ohio), Jeff Miller (Republican Party, Florida), Jo Ann Emerson (Republican Party, Montana), Bob Scott (Democratic Party, Georgia), Carolyn McCarthy (Democratic Party, New York), Mike Ross (Democratic Party, Arkansas).
The Head of the Georgian Delegation, Giorgi Kandelaki revised the current challenges of the country in terms of security, the contribution of Georgia in NATO peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan and the state of accession of Georgia to NATO in the context of the Summit of Alliance, scheduled to be held in Chicago next year.
The US Congressmen thanked Georgian colleagues for the wide-scale contribution of Georgia in Afghanistan. They spoke of the support of US Congress to Georgia in the context of Chicago Summit.
After the meeting, the US Delegation, composed of the Congressmen from the Republican and Democratic parties, distributed the written statement.
The statement provides that within the scope of the annual action plan of NATO and due to the progress, achieved in the context of reforms in general, it is necessary to peacefully approve the irreversibility of accession of Georgia to NATO and proposal of the action plan for accession to Georgia at the Chicago Summit.
The statement also provides that the US Congress considers the resolution, supporting launch of negotiations of the Free Trade Agreement with Georgia. The US Delegation also hailed the positive steps of Georgia in terms of cooperation in the defense sphere. "Powerful Georgia is undoubtedly in interests of NATO and member countries" - the statement provides.
