Burma's government is blaming ethnic Kachin rebels for starting a week of fighting along the northeastern border with China.

The state-run New Light of Myanmar reported Saturday that the army is battling rebels to protect a major Chinese-built hydroelectric power project that has come under threat from the rebels.

The rebels have blamed government forces for launching a major offensive, after rebels rejected a call to leave the region.

Kachin news reports say thousands of people have fled to the China border in recent days to escape the fighting.

The Kachin militia is one of several minority ethnic rebel groups in Burma fighting for greater autonomy.
