Today marks the beginning of Youth and Sports Day, which will be celebrated across Turkey for 21 days. Under a new regulation a symbolic flag is now being carried by Turkish athletes across Turkey, from Samsun to Ankara, to be presented to Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.
One major problem facing Turkish youth is doubtlessly the drug traffickers who surround and abuse young people by promising them a better life and displaying a false picture of relief and happiness.
While Ataturk's policy on sports was aimed at having a serious impact on Turkish society, today people are even afraid to go to soccer matches for fear of violence. From Ataturk's perspective, sports is a universal concept which ties all the world's nations together under a shared goal and which is useful for making a country's name known to the world.
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer: There are many great lessons to be learned from Ataturk's life and experience that should be taken into consideration. Every young person in Turkey should therefore read everything that Ataturk wrote and said
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan: It's one of our priorities to educate our youth to be hard-working and productive people who are self-confident, with a good command of world affairs, who defend their national and ethical values, and believe in democracy.
