Nakhchivan Exports Sugar Beet to Turkey |
18 October 2004The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) of Azerbaijan has begun to pick the crop of sugar beet. The first shipment of 800 tons was exported to Turkey early this week.

The export complies with the contract between the Ministry of Agriculture of NAR and the Agri Sugar Factory of Turkey. The contract envisages that 90,000 tons of sugar beet will be shipped to Turkey before the end of the year. The plantations of sugar beet in Nakhchivan cover 3,000 hectares.
The Turkish side pays for the sugar beet in granulated sugar. They give 95 kilograms of granulated sugar for each ton of sugar beet.
The farmers of NAR picked 130,000 tons of sugar beet last year. It is planned to export 100,000 tons of this amount to Turkey and 20,000 tons to Iran, while 10,000 tons will be used to meet the local demand.
